Questions people ask

Is 2028 a leap year?
Yes. 2028 is divisible by 4 and not a century year, so February 2028 has 29 days. The leap day, 29 February 2028, is a Tuesday.
What is the leap year rule?
A year is a leap year if it is divisible by 4, except century years (divisible by 100), which are only leap years if also divisible by 400. So 2000 was a leap year but 1900 was not, and 2100 will not be.
When was the last leap year and when is the next?
Shown in the checker above, relative to today on your device. Leap years in this period: 2024, 2028, 2032, 2036.
Why do we have leap years?
A solar (tropical) year is about 365.2422 days. Without leap days the calendar would drift against the seasons by roughly a day every four years. Pope Gregory XIII's 1582 reform added the century exception to fix the Julian calendar's overcorrection.
How are leap-day birthdays handled?
Legally it varies by country; in the UK and many others a person born on 29 February reaches a new age on 1 March in common years, while some jurisdictions use 28 February. Our date calculator clamps to 28 February when adding years to 29 February.
