How to read the year dial
The ring at the top is the whole year drawn as one circle: each thin tick is a day, the longer ticks mark the first of each month, and the dots just inside are public holidays for the country you picked. The gold hand points at today, and the lighter arc behind it shows how much of the year has already gone. February's sector is visibly narrower than its neighbours; in a leap year it gains one tick.
Day-of-year and week numbers are more useful than they sound. Factories stamp batch codes as a year plus day number (the "Julian date"), payroll and project plans across Europe run on ISO week numbers, and a quick look at days left in the year tells you how much runway a deadline really has.
