The Moon goes through eight distinct phases as it orbits Earth every ~29.5 days. These phases are determined by the Moon's position relative to the Sun and Earth.
Major Phases:
- π New Moon: Moon is between Earth and Sun (0% illuminated)
- π First Quarter: Right half is illuminated (50%)
- π Full Moon: Earth is between Moon and Sun (100%)
- π Last Quarter: Left half is illuminated (50%)
Intermediate Phases:
- π Waxing Crescent: Thin crescent growing larger
- π Waxing Gibbous: More than half, approaching full
- π Waning Gibbous: Just past full, decreasing
- π Waning Crescent: Thin crescent getting smaller
