The Moon goes through eight distinct phases as it orbits Earth every ~29.5 days. These phases are determined by the Moon's position relative to the Sun and Earth.
Major Phases:
- 🌑 New Moon: Moon is between Earth and Sun (0% illuminated)
- 🌓 First Quarter: Right half is illuminated (50%)
- 🌕 Full Moon: Earth is between Moon and Sun (100%)
- 🌗 Last Quarter: Left half is illuminated (50%)
Intermediate Phases:
- 🌒 Waxing Crescent: Thin crescent growing larger
- 🌔 Waxing Gibbous: More than half, approaching full
- 🌖 Waning Gibbous: Just past full, decreasing
- 🌘 Waning Crescent: Thin crescent getting smaller
